Maltese aquatic sport has reached a landmark moment, as Malta has, for the first time ever, an appointed Technical Delegate for the Water Polo European Championships.

Ms. Rita Azzopardi has been officially selected as Technical Delegate for the Women’s Water Polo Championship 2026, which will take place in Funchal, Portugal. This prestigious appointment marks a significant step forward for Malta on the European sporting stage.

Adding to this remarkable achievement, Mr. Massimo Angilleri has been chosen as a neutral referee for the same championship in Funchal, further highlighting Malta’s growing influence in international officiating.

Meanwhile, Mr. Alex De Raffaele has been appointed as referee for the Men’s Water Polo Championship scheduled to be held in Belgrade.

Completing this exceptional list of appointments, ASA President Karl Izzo, in his role as Vice Chairman of the TWPC, will oversee the technical delegates across both major European competitions.

These four appointments collectively reflect Malta’s rising reputation, expertise, and professionalism within European aquatics. A heartfelt congratulations to all—an extraordinary achievement for Maltese sport!
