West Ham United have been relegated from the Premier League after failing to achieve the combination of results needed on the final day to preserve their top-flight status, while London rivals Tottenham Hotspur secured survival.

The Hammers entered their final fixture of the campaign against Leeds United sitting 18th in the table, two points behind Spurs.

To avoid relegation, West Ham needed to defeat Leeds and rely on Tottenham losing at home to Everton FC, with Spurs’ superior goal difference meaning even a draw would likely have been enough for them to stay up.

Although West Ham did their part with a convincing 3-0 victory over Leeds, Tottenham’s 1-0 win against Everton ensured they remained in the Premier League and condemned the Hammers to relegation.

Relegation brings an end to West Ham United’s Premier League stay and sends the club back to the Championship for the first time in 14 years following a difficult and inconsistent campaign.

Despite remaining in the survival fight until the final weekend, the Hammers were unable to recover from their prolonged spell in the bottom three, with their fate ultimately shaped across the full 38-game season rather than solely by the final round of fixtures.

Nuno unable to spark turnaround

West Ham appointed Nuno Espírito Santo in September after dismissing Graham Potter following a poor start to the season.

Although the managerial change initially produced a slight improvement, costly results against fellow relegation rivals left the club struggling to build momentum, finishing the campaign with 10 wins, nine draws, and 19 defeats.

As the season entered its closing weeks, survival increasingly depended on results elsewhere as much as West Ham’s own performances.

The relegation represents a major setback for a club that had established itself as a regular mid-table Premier League side in recent years, while also enjoying European success after winning the UEFA Conference League in 2023.

Relegation now leaves West Ham United facing major questions regarding recruitment, player retention, and financial planning as the club prepares for life outside the Premier League.

For Tottenham Hotspur, who had been facing the possibility of a first top-flight relegation in four decades, the final-day outcome brings significant relief, though it is unlikely to change the broader judgement of an underwhelming campaign.

Supporters will now turn their focus toward the future under new head coach Roberto De Zerbi, hoping to move beyond what has been a chaotic, injury-hit season.

Meanwhile, West Ham’s attention shifts toward the Championship and the substantial rebuilding task required if they are to secure an immediate return to the top flight.

The Hammers will join Burnley FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers FC in the Championship next season.
