RCD Mallorca ended a three-match winless run with a convincing 3-0 victory over Real Oviedo, but it was not enough to prevent relegation from LaLiga. The club finished on 42 points, the highest total ever recorded by a relegated side since Deportivo de La Coruña in the 2010/11 season.

With survival hinging on a win, tension was high inside the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix, and a nervy start from the hosts only increased the anxiety among the home supporters.

The visitors nearly struck early when David Carmo found space inside the six-yard box, but he failed to make proper contact with his header.

That moment appeared to spark RCD Mallorca into life, as they began to push forward with greater intent, led by Takuma Asano and Vedat Muriqi.

Asano came closest first, breaking down the right flank before firing a low effort across goal that narrowly missed the far post.

Muriqi then had a golden opportunity of his own, rising unmarked to meet a cross, but his header was comfortably saved by Horatiu Moldovan after being struck straight at the goalkeeper.

With news filtering through that other results were going against them, the mood inside the stadium briefly lifted as RCD Mallorca struck just before half-time.

A deep delivery from Pablo Maffeo initially looked overhit, but Pablo Torre reacted brilliantly to keep the move alive, arriving at the perfect moment to guide a cushioned first-time volley into the net and give Los Piratas the lead.

As their survival hopes slipped further out of their hands, attention among the home supporters increasingly shifted to updates from elsewhere, with many glued to their phones.

On the pitch, Mallorca came close to extending their advantage on 55 minutes when Sergi Darder’s deflected effort struck the post before dropping safely into the hands of Horatiu Moldovan.

Real Oviedo offered little attacking threat in response, and the result was effectively sealed in the 83rd minute when Manu Morlanes struck a volley that bounced awkwardly before looping into the top corner to make it 2-0.

Further gloss was added to the scoreline in the 88th minute when Vedat Muriqi powered the ball home from close range, rounding off an impressive individual season with 23 LaLiga goals for RCD Mallorca.

However, despite taking all three points, Mallorca’s fate was already sealed as they finished 18th, missing out on survival due to tie-breakers against Osasuna and Levante, who also ended the campaign on 42 points.

For Real Oviedo, the result merely compounded a difficult season, with relegation already confirmed back on matchday 35, and a seven-game winless run ensuring they ended the campaign at the bottom of the table.
