High anticipation as Malta’s record-breaking Blackball teams return home

Excitement is building ahead of the arrival of Malta’s national Blackball teams, who are set to land in Malta this evening at around 8:30 p.m. on a direct flight from Dublin. The delegation, led by Malta Blackball Federation president Philip Gatt, returns from Ennis, Ireland, after one of the most successful European Championship campaigns in the nation’s history.
On the final day of competition, Malta added three more gold medals, further solidifying their status as one of Europe’s elite Blackball nations.
The first gold came in the Under-23 Doubles, where the Maltese pair Steven Muscat and Nordai Desira triumphed to claim the European title.
Some historic results
In the Under-15 European Final, the team coached by Robert Attard clinched an 8–4 win over Northern Ireland, continuing Malta’s tradition of excellence in youth development.
A historic achievement followed in the Over-40 Seniors category. Led by Darren Micallef, Malta dominated reigning European and World Champions England, winning with a stunning 13–1 scoreline. This victory marked Malta’s first-ever European title in the Seniors category, a milestone moment for the sport locally.
The final triumph of the championships came in the Men’s Singles, where Mevrick Zammit etched his name into European Blackball history. After Malta’s Men’s Team A narrowly lost their team final to England, Zammit bounced back emphatically, defeating Anthony Monarch 7–5 to capture his first European crown.
The 2025 European Championships featured around 1,200 athletes, making it one of the largest editions ever. Over ten intense days, the Maltese players displayed remarkable focus, determination, and resilience — proving once again that Malta is firmly established among Europe’s strongest Blackball nations.
The returning teams are expected to receive a warm welcome as they arrive home with a historic medal haul and unforgettable achievements.
