Has Thomas Tuchel Delivered a Blow to ‘Bellingham’s Brand’?

When Jude Bellingham reluctantly trudged off the pitch in Albania on Sunday, replaced by Morgan Rogers, alarm bells may have started ringing for England manager Thomas Tuchel.

Bellingham is undeniably a footballing prodigy, yet certain aspects of his demeanor risk overshadowing his on-field brilliance. At just 22, the Real Madrid midfielder often carries himself with the air of someone who sees no equal.

Tuchel and the Bellingham Controversy

Few have forgotten Bellingham’s celebrated last-minute equalizer against Slovakia at Euro 2024, when he sprinted to the sideline and declared, “Who else?” After the match, he added: “You hear people talk a lot of rubbish, so it’s nice that when you deliver, you can give them a little bit back.”

Was this a dig at then-manager Gareth Southgate, or at the critics who had questioned his performances? Either way, the message was clear: Bellingham was not shy of confrontation.

Since taking over the England squad, Tuchel has not shied away from commenting on the midfielder’s temperament. Speaking on Bellingham’s fiery nature, the German observed:

“Sometimes you see the explosion towards referees and the anger. That edge is hard to find. If he smiles, he wins everyone, but sometimes you see the rage, the hunger, and the fire—and it comes out in a way that can be a bit repulsive.”

Unhappy in Albania

After the Albania game, Tuchel addressed Bellingham’s visible displeasure at being substituted:

“He didn’t like it, but no one likes it. That’s how it is… That is the decision, and he has to accept it. I saw he was not happy. With players like Jude, who are so competitive, that’s natural. But my word stands. It’s about standards, level, commitment, and respect. We will not change our decision because someone is waving their arms.”

Despite this minor flare-up, Bellingham’s performance was more than commendable.

A Brilliant All-Round Display

Bellingham registered 79 touches—the most of any England midfielder or attacker—and dominated 12 one-on-one duels, winning seven. He also made joint-highest successful tackles and earned three fouls, topping both sides in that category. Only Harry Kane had more touches inside the opposition box.

Even amid his excellence, Tuchel’s insistence on maintaining behavioral standards highlights the manager’s focus on discipline as much as skill.

Jobe Bellingham’s Struggles

The Bellingham family dynamic adds another layer to the story. Jude’s younger brother, Jobe, has struggled to establish himself at Borussia Dortmund. A half-time substitution on his debut against St. Pauli led to a heated confrontation by father Mark Bellingham with Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl—a moment that resulted in parents being banned from technical areas.

In 16 games across competitions, Jobe has contributed just one assist in the Champions League and another goal and assist in the Club World Cup. Full 90-minute appearances remain rare, and his performance ratings rarely surpass seven out of 10, illustrating the challenges he faces adapting to top-flight football.

Time for Football to Speak

For two young talents still entering their prime, the question remains: is this merely a temporary setback, or could it signal cracks in the Bellingham “brand”?

For now, the focus should return where it belongs—on their football. It’s time for Jude and Jobe to let their performances, rather than off-field drama, define them.
