Alex Molčan, ranked 166th in the world, pulled off a stunning upset in the opening round of the ATP 500 clay tournament in Munich on Tuesday, defeating Alexander Bublik in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

The Slovak fought his way into the main draw through qualifying, first recovering from a set down to beat Roberto Carballés Baena, before overcoming Emilio Nava.

After those efforts, Molčan faced a daunting first-round challenge against the world No. 11, but rose to the occasion impressively.

He made a strong start, breaking Bublik’s serve in the opening game and holding to take a 2-0 lead. However, the early advantage was short-lived as Bublik quickly responded to level the score.

Alex Molčan soon regained control with another break and even threatened a third in the ninth game, earning two set points on Alexander Bublik’s serve. Although he was unable to convert them, it proved inconsequential as he wrapped up the opening set in the following game.

The second set was far more comfortable for the Slovak, who remained solid on serve throughout, broke Bublik twice, and eventually sealed the upset on his third match point.

With the victory, Molčan not only stunned the higher-ranked opponent but also recorded his first win over a top-20 player in three years. He will now face Daniel Altmaier, currently ranked 56th in the world, in the round of 16.
