Javier Mascherano departs Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami after historic season

Javier Mascherano has announced his resignation as head coach of Inter Miami CF, citing personal reasons, just one season after guiding the club through the most successful period in its history.
The Argentine confirmed his departure in an official statement, where he expressed gratitude to the club, players, and supporters for their backing during his time in charge.
“I want to announce that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my tenure as head coach of Inter Miami. First of all, I want to thank the club for their trust, all the staff for their collective effort, but especially the players, who made unforgettable moments possible,” he said.
“I also thank the fans and the club’s family, because without them none of this would have been possible. I will always keep the memory of our first trophy close to my heart and, wherever I go, I will continue to wish them the best of luck.”
Mascherano leaves after a landmark season in which Inter Miami secured the most significant achievements in their history under his leadership.
Javier Mascherano’s departure from Inter Miami CF prompted an immediate response from club management, with Jorge Mas praising the Argentine’s lasting influence on the team.
“Javier will always be part of the club’s history. Not just for the trophies won, like the MLS Cup, or for our run in the FIFA Club World Cup, but also for the example he set every day through his hard work and dedication. We respect his decision and thank him for everything,” he said.
Guillermo Hoyos appointed new head coach
During the 2025 season — his first in charge — Mascherano delivered a highly successful campaign, guiding Inter Miami to two major trophies, including their first-ever MLS Cup title, while also setting a club record of 101 goals in a single season.
The club also made history on the international stage, becoming the first MLS side to reach the knockout rounds of the FIFA Club World Cup, as well as the first CONCACAF team to defeat a European opponent in an official match.
Following Mascherano’s exit, Inter Miami confirmed that Guillermo Hoyos will take over as head coach, while Alberto Marrero will step in as sporting director.
