Lionel Messi scored a brace and contributed to two more goals as Inter Miami CF came from behind to secure a thrilling 5-3 away win over FC Cincinnati in MLS action on Wednesday.

With the World Cup in North America now under a month away, the Argentina captain continues to show outstanding form.

The forward has now netted 11 times in 12 MLS appearances this campaign, with Miami’s latest success moving them up to second in the Eastern Conference standings on 25 points.

Messi gave the visitors the lead in the 24th minute after capitalising on a fortunate rebound following a misplaced clearance from Matt Miazga.

The home side levelled before the break through a 41st-minute penalty from Kevin Denkey, and shortly after half-time Pavel Bucha finished from close range to make it 2-1 for Cincinnati.

However, Messi responded in the 55th minute, completing a slick Miami move with a left-footed finish after being set up by Rodrigo De Paul.

Evander restored FC Cincinnati’s lead in the 64th minute, firing home from outside the penalty area for his seventh goal in six matches.

However, Lionel Messi continued to inspire Inter Miami CF’s comeback, providing an assist for fellow Argentine youngster Mateo Silvetti in the 79th minute before Mexico international Germán Berterame added another to make it 4-3.

Messi then played a decisive role in the final goal just before full-time.

The 38-year-old met a cross from Silvetti with an acrobatic right-footed effort that struck the post before rebounding off goalkeeper Roman Celentano and into the net for an own goal.

Guillermo Hoyos praised his players after the dramatic victory, applauding their performance against difficult opposition away from home.

“What they produced tonight was outstanding, especially against such a strong side and on a challenging surface,” the Inter Miami CF coach said.

“It’s never easy to come here and play. This team isn’t in MLS just to make up the numbers.

“They’re here to compete, to fight for every moment, and to prove to the world that top-level football is being played here as well.”

Hoyos also expressed his satisfaction with the overall display from his side.

“We’re leaving with great happiness,” he added.

“The team showed that it can play football at an extremely high standard.”
