James Rodríguez endured a frustrating farewell before linking up with Colombia for World Cup preparations, as Minnesota United FC suffered a 1-0 defeat to Colorado Rapids in MLS action on Wednesday.

Ahead of the match, Minnesota confirmed that the experienced midfielder would depart to join the Colombian national team, despite the club still having two league fixtures remaining before the MLS season pauses for the World Cup.

“The club is proud to support James as he represents his country on the biggest stage in football, and we wish him the very best during training camp and throughout the tournament,” Minnesota said in an official statement.

Rodriguez signed for Minnesota as a free agent in February, agreeing to a deal set to run until June, during the World Cup period.

Minnesota United FC also hold an option to extend the contract of James Rodríguez through the end of the year, although all signs suggest the club will not activate it, meaning he has likely already played his final match for them.

Across six MLS appearances—two of them starts, including Wednesday’s game—the Colombian midfielder registered two assists but did not score.
