Sunderland climbed to second in the Premier League with a stunning 2-1 comeback victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, halting the Blues’ four-game winning streak in all competitions.

The Black Cats’ remarkable season start—their best opening eight-game run in the Premier League since 1999/2000—faced an early test when Chelsea struck inside four minutes. Pedro Neto’s counter-attack found Alejandro Garnacho, who raced down the left before drilling a low strike through Robin Roefs’ legs to score his first goal for the club.

Sunderland eventually regained their composure. A long throw caused chaos in the Chelsea box, allowing Wilson Isidor to react first and flick the ball past Robert Sánchez to level the score. The visitors then came close to taking the lead moments later, but Isidor’s shot went narrowly wide.

Chelsea regained some control toward the end of the first half. Garnacho’s sliding effort at the back post was scrambled away by Roefs, and Trevoh Chalobah’s long-range strike was tipped over the bar by the goalkeeper, keeping the scoreline level.

As the hour mark approached, Sunderland manager Enzo Maresca made a key change, bringing on Estêvão for Garnacho. The Brazilian quickly tested the Stamford Bridge crowd with a deflected shot that narrowly missed.

Sunderland, deploying a back five for the first time this season under Régis Le Bris, remained solid in defence, restricting Chelsea to half-chances as the match neared its conclusion. The breakthrough finally came in stoppage time when substitute Brian Brobbey held up the ball and laid it off for Chemsdine Talbi, who calmly swept home the winning goal.

The dramatic victory extends Sunderland’s unbeaten streak to 14 away league games against London clubs (W5, D9). Chelsea, meanwhile, slip to seventh, three points behind the high-flying Black Cats in second.
