Newcastle Beat Fulham with Late Guimarães Goal

Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães struck a dramatic 90th-minute winner to secure a vital 2-1 home victory over Fulham at St. James’ Park. The defeat extended Fulham’s struggles in the Premier League, marking their fourth consecutive loss for the first time since April 2023.
The game started at a furious pace, with Fulham’s Kenny Tete picking up an early yellow card and Newcastle’s Nick Woltemade rattling the left-hand post with a sliced effort inside the six-yard box. Just 10 minutes in, the Magpies were already on top. Guimarães came close from distance, and Miguel Almirón’s fierce shot from a tight angle was tipped onto the post by Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
Despite Fulham regaining some composure, Newcastle’s dominance soon paid off. In the 18th minute, Anthony Gordon capitalized on a hesitation from Calvin Bassey, stealing possession and firing a low strike past Leno to give the hosts the lead in somewhat embarrassing fashion for the Fulham keeper.
Fulham responded strongly. Around 30 minutes, Sander Berge’s effort from the edge of the box was parried by Nick Pope into the path of Adama Traoré, whose follow-up cross-shot failed to trouble the goal. Just before half-time, Newcastle came close to doubling their lead when Gordon set up Almirón, but Leno’s sharp save forced a corner, ending the half with the Magpies narrowly ahead.
Fulham sought a swift response after the break, and manager Marco Silva introduced exciting young Brazilian forward Kevin. Ten minutes into the second half, Kevin’s cross found Raul Jiménez, whose shot hit the crossbar, allowing Sasa Lukic to head home a deserved equalizer.
Eddie Howe responded with a triple attacking substitution, hoping to regain the lead. Fulham looked the more likely winners with 15 minutes remaining, but Newcastle pressed on. Joelinton’s header from a Kieran Trippier cross struck the side netting, and Sandro Tonali’s attempt was superbly saved by Leno.
The decisive moment arrived in stoppage time. A parried shot by William Osula fell to Bruno Guimarães, who calmly slotted home to secure a dramatic 90th-minute winner.
The result lifts Newcastle to 11th in the Premier League, while Fulham remain in 16th, just three points above the relegation zone.
