Sipho Chaine makes history with new betway Premiership record
Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine has set a new Betway Premiership record after becoming the first goalkeeper to register 14 clean sheets in the opening 20 matches of a season.
Chaine has played a crucial role in the Buccaneers’ defensive strength this campaign, with the team conceding just eight goals so far. During that impressive run, the shot-stopper has kept 14 shutouts, underlining his consistency between the posts.
Only a handful of teams have managed to score against him this season. Marumo Gallants and Mamelodi Sundowns are the only sides to score twice in a single match against the Pirates goalkeeper. He has also conceded goals against Sekhukhune United, Sundowns again, Golden Arrows and Polokwane City.
Sundowns forward Brayan Leon scored a brace in their win last month, making him the only player to net twice against Chaine this season.
With this achievement, Chaine surpasses the previous record held by Ronwen Williams, who managed 13 clean sheets after 20 matches during the 2022/23 campaign.
