Pablo Doffo has been appointed head coach of Sliema Wanderers until the end of the current season, after the club’s management reached an agreement with Nadur Youngsters and the Argentine coach.

Doffo replaces Paul Zammit, who left the Blues by mutual consent following their defeat to Swieqi United in the Meridianbet FA Trophy.

An exclusive photograph for TVMSport captured the moment Sliema Wanderers president Keith Perry and Pablo Doffo finalised the agreement for the coach to lead the team until the conclusion of the 2025/26 season. The club’s management will assess the results achieved in the Closing Round of the YoHealth Malta Premier before deciding whether Doffo will remain in charge beyond the end of the season.

Prior to this appointment, Doffo was head coach of Nadur Youngsters in the Gozo Football League, where he recorded three wins, one draw and seven defeats from eleven matches.

Doffo, who holds dual Argentine and Italian citizenship, has previously coached Senglea Athletic as player-coach, as well as Marsaxlokk and Swieqi United. He joined Marsaxlokk in 2021 when the club were competing in the Challenge League and led them to promotion to the Premier League at the end of the season. He remained in charge for the 2022/23 Premier League campaign, guiding the South side to the quarter-finals of the FA Trophy.

He later joined Swieqi United, where he coached the club in the Challenge League for two seasons between 2023 and 2025. In his first season with Swieqi, he led the team to the Round of 16 of the FA Trophy, where they were eliminated by his former club Marsaxlokk.

As a player, Pablo Doffo began his career at the S. Belgrano Academy in Argentina before progressing to the senior team. He later played for Talleres Perico before joining Hibernians in January 2006. After two years with the Paolites, he moved to Floriana, where he spent four seasons before joining Naxxar Lions in 2012. In 2015 he signed for Senglea Athletic as player-coach, and in 2017 joined Marsaxlokk, where he played until retiring from football in 2022. It was from there that he took over Marsaxlokk as head coach.

Doffo’s first match in charge of Sliema Wanderers will be against Ħamrun Spartans this Saturday, in the final fixture of the second phase of the Opening Round of the YoHealth Malta Premier. Sliema Wanderers currently sit third in the Top 6, one point ahead of Valletta, who are due to play later today. The club’s full focus is now on the league, with the primary objective being qualification for European competition next season.

It was a busy day for Sliema Wanderers, as the club also announced the appointment of Mark Scerri as Technical Director.

Scerri, 35, is synonymous with the Wanderers, having spent his entire playing career at the club. He joined the senior team in January 2005 and went on to enjoy a 19-year career with the Blues.

During his time at Sliema Wanderers, Scerri made 379 appearances in all competitions and scored 25 goals. He won the FA Trophy on three occasions (2008/09, 2015/16 and 2023/24) and lifted the Super Cup in 2009. He was also selected to represent the Malta national team during this period.
