Valletta FC appears poised for a busy few days in the transfer market as they work to strengthen their squad during the current window. It is clear the Citizens are actively seeking a replacement for the Brazilian player Jefferson, whose departure from the club has already been announced.

Sources close to the club have confirmed that head coach Thane Micallef is expected to add one or two new foreign players to the roster. Simultaneously, Valletta is close to offloading one of their Maltese players who was part of the team’s promotion campaign from the Challenge League to the Malta Premier just a year ago.

Twenty-seven-year-old left-back Zack Cassar is a likely candidate to leave Valletta in January. Cassar has found very limited playing time this season, featuring for less than a quarter of an hour in the opening league game against Birkirkara. However, Micallef utilized Cassar more frequently during the Jubilee Cup, where restrictions on foreign players provided more opportunities for local talent. Cassar played in four Jubilee Cup matches, including the full 90 minutes of the final, which Valletta won 3-1 against Sliema Wanderers.

The former player for several clubs—including Birkirkara, Senglea Athletic, Gudja United, Floriana, and Gżira United—is attracting interest from multiple teams, particularly those challenging for promotion from the Challenge League. Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s FC, the current league leaders coached by Edgar Degabriele, are understood to be frontrunners for his signature as they chase a historic promotion to the top flight of Maltese football. Birżebbuġa St. Peter’s has never previously competed in the highest division.
