A rapid first-half brace from Vivianne Miedema powered Manchester City Women to a commanding 3-0 derby victory over Manchester United Women at Old Trafford, moving them to the brink of their first Women’s Super League title since 2016.

The win took City to 49 points from 19 of 22 matches. Meanwhile, Arsenal Women climbed to second place on 38 points after a 5-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur Women at the Emirates, with two games still in hand on the leaders.

Arsenal’s victory pushed United, also on 38 points, down to third on goal difference, while reigning champions Chelsea Women sit fourth with 37 points after winning the previous six titles.

Amid rapidly changing weather conditions, City burst out of the blocks and maintained relentless intensity throughout, ensuring all three points were secured.

Lauren Hemp rattled the crossbar in the 16th minute, and just moments later Miedema broke the deadlock, guiding a looping header from a corner beyond Phallon Tullis-Joyce in the United goal.

Two minutes later, Vivianne Miedema struck again as Manchester City Women carved through the pitch with a flowing passing move, with Kerstin Casparij delivering a cross for her unmarked compatriot to rise and head the ball downward into the net.

Casparij then added the third goal four minutes after the interval, arriving at the back post to finish after a cross from Lauren Hemp drifted just beyond the reach of striker Bunny Shaw.

Manchester United Women, managed by Marc Skinner, struggled to match City’s intensity and appeared a step behind throughout, failing to register a shot on target until late in the second half. By then, it was too little too late, as City comfortably saw out the win and moved closer to securing their first league title in a decade.

Andrée Jeglertz, head coach of Manchester City Women, expressed confidence in his squad, stating that their level of belief means they can trouble any opponent if they maintain their current approach.

He added that while the title race is not yet decided and there are still three matches remaining, the team is managing the pressure well thanks to their openness and strong mentality.

Elsewhere in a day filled with derbies in the Women’s Super League, Liverpool Women secured a 3-2 victory over Everton Women in the early kickoff.

Meanwhile, Alessia Russo scored a first-half hat-trick as Arsenal Women defeated Tottenham Hotspur Women in front of a crowd of 46,123 spectators.
