Thomas Tuchel has indicated that Harry Maguire would currently rank as only his fifth-choice centre-back, dealing a setback to the defender’s chances of making the FIFA World Cup squad.

Tuchel gave Maguire his first start for England national football team in 18 months during Friday’s 1-1 friendly draw against Uruguay. In that match, the Manchester United defender produced a steady performance at Wembley.

The 33-year-old has featured in three major tournaments for England and has earned 65 international caps, highlighting his experience at the highest level.

However, despite acknowledging Maguire’s qualities, Tuchel suggested he currently sits behind Ezri Konsa, Marc Guéhi, John Stones and Trevoh Chalobah in the defensive hierarchy.

Tuchel described Maguire as a “solid” centre-back, praising his composure on the ball, aerial strength and effectiveness from set-pieces. However, he added that he prefers other players with different profiles to start matches.

He specifically noted Konsa as ahead, while also placing Guéhi above him, and suggested Chalobah offers slightly more mobility. Tuchel also mentioned Stones among those higher in the pecking order, although the defender has been managing injuries and needed to report to camp.

The coach explained that his decision to call up Maguire was partly to assess him in person and observe his behaviour within the squad, adding that the defender will remain with the group as preparations continue.

Harry Maguire has just one remaining opportunity to strengthen his case for inclusion in England national football team’s World Cup squad, with the team set to face Japan national football team in a friendly at Wembley on Tuesday.

Thomas Tuchel’s side will not be in action again until a pair of World Cup warm-up matches in June, after the 26-man squad for the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada is announced.

When asked if Maguire would make the squad if it were selected immediately, Tuchel avoided giving a definitive answer, saying the situation was hypothetical and that there is no immediate need to finalize selections.

He did, however, express satisfaction with Maguire’s performance, noting that the defender delivered what is typically expected of him at Manchester United. Tuchel added that he was pleased with the display and reiterated that his overall assessment of the player remains unchanged, as Maguire provided exactly what he anticipated.

John Stones was unavailable for England national football team’s match against Uruguay after picking up a calf issue during training.

The Manchester City defender has made only five appearances for his club since the November international break and has struggled to secure a consistent run of games due to fitness concerns.

Despite his limited involvement, Thomas Tuchel remains confident in Stones’ ability, stating that the defender still has “credit in the bank” and describing him as “world class.”
