James Trafford has admitted his return to Manchester City has not gone as planned, with limited first-team chances following the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

A graduate of City’s academy, Trafford impressed during a loan spell at Burnley FC last season, recording 29 clean sheets in 45 Championship matches before rejoining the Premier League champions in July.

He featured in the opening three league games of the campaign but has since found opportunities scarce, largely appearing in domestic cup competitions after Donnarumma’s late transfer.

Reflecting on the season, Trafford described it as inconsistent due to his lack of game time. He acknowledged that his summer decision to return had not produced the outcome he had hoped for, but remains committed to improving and maintaining a positive mindset.

Despite the setbacks, Trafford emphasised his focus on daily development, staying ready for opportunities, and continuing to grow within a highly competitive squad.

Despite limited chances at Manchester City, James Trafford still earned his senior England national football team debut in March, featuring in a friendly against Uruguay national football team, and now has his sights set on a place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the upcoming World Cup.

The goalkeeper admitted that making the final squad would be a major milestone, describing it as a “brilliant” opportunity, but acknowledged that his immediate focus remains limited given the lack of regular game time.

Looking ahead, Trafford is part of the squad preparing for an important clash this weekend, as City take on Southampton FC in the FA Cup semi-finals on Saturday.
