FC Barcelona coach Hansi Flick remains confident that teenage star Lamine Yamal will return stronger from injury and be ready for the World Cup with Spain.

The 18-year-old has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering a hamstring injury during Barcelona’s win over Celta Vigo in LaLiga. Yamal had made a key contribution in that match, winning and scoring a penalty to help maintain his side’s nine-point lead over Real Madrid at the top of the table, before being forced off.

Flick admitted the situation is difficult for both the player and the team, particularly as it marks Yamal’s first muscle injury. However, he emphasised the youngster’s strong mindset and determination to recover.

According to Flick, Yamal remains highly motivated and focused on his rehabilitation. While he will miss the rest of the club season, there is optimism that he will be fit in time for the World Cup and could return in even better condition.

Yamal, who finished second in the Ballon d’Or voting last year and played a major role in Spain national football team’s triumph at UEFA Euro 2024, has been a central figure in Barcelona’s push to defend their league title.

Hansi Flick suggested that Lamine Yamal may have aggravated his injury after the foul that led to the penalty, explaining the youngster did not fully recognise the warning signs from his body.

Flick said Yamal initially felt some discomfort following the challenge, but chose to continue and take the penalty, which may have worsened the issue.

The Barcelona coach pointed out that it is a learning moment for the 18-year-old, as it is the first muscle injury of his career. He stressed that understanding the body’s signals is part of a young player’s development.

While acknowledging the difficulty of the situation given Yamal’s age, Flick described the setback as valuable experience that will help the forward grow and manage similar situations better in the future.

Lamine Yamal has enjoyed a standout season for FC Barcelona, registering 24 goals and 18 assists in all competitions, including nine goals in his last 12 league appearances.

Hansi Flick praised the teenager’s recent performances, describing him as operating at an “unbelievable level” and already showing maturity beyond his age.

Flick said Yamal is “clever” and “smart,” with a clear understanding of his game, but acknowledged that the current injury will be a setback. Even so, he stressed that the focus now must be on recovery, fitness, and a steady return to full strength.

Barcelona now turn their attention to a LaLiga trip to Getafe CF on Saturday, while rivals Real Madrid travel to Real Betis on Friday.
