Ħamrun Spartans were left to rue a series of missed opportunities as they fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Swiss side FC Lausanne-Sport in their second UEFA Conference League group stage match at the National Stadium.

Despite facing a more experienced opponent, the Malta champions once again displayed spirit and resilience but were undone by a single first-half strike from Gaoussou Diakite. The decisive goal arrived just moments after Saliou Thioune had spurned a glorious chance at the other end — a costly miss that summed up the evening for the Spartans.

The result leaves Ħamrun still searching for their first points of the group stage, but their performances so far have proven that they can compete at this level. Their next test will be a challenging away fixture against group leaders Samsunspor in Turkey.

Battling Performance, Missed Opportunities

Coach Giacomo Modica made two changes from the team that lost to Jagiellonia two weeks earlier, with Merlin Hadzi replacing the suspended Joseph Mbong, and Emerson Marcelina coming in for Domantas Simkus.

The early stages were tightly contested, with both sides cancelling each other out in midfield. Ħamrun had the first sight of goal on 18 minutes when Ante Coric volleyed over following a cross from Raphael Compri.

Lausanne then began to grow into the game, with Theo Bair twice denied by excellent saves from Henry Bonello, who also showed superb reflexes to keep out an effort from Olivier Custodio.

In the 35th minute, Thioune missed a golden opportunity for Ħamrun after being set up by Hadzi, his close-range effort pushed away by Karlo Letica. Just three minutes later, Lausanne punished that miss when Diakite fired home a curling shot off the upright to put the visitors ahead.

Bonello prevented further damage before the interval with a fine stop from Jamie Roche’s header.

Second-Half Pressure, No Reward

Ħamrun emerged strongly after the break, showing determination to level the score. Early on, Thioune hit the side netting, and shortly after, Coric went close with a curling strike that narrowly missed the target.

On 67 minutes, substitute Mouad El Fanis nodded wide from close range after being picked out by Nadjib Koffi, as the Spartans’ relentless pressure went unrewarded.

Five minutes from time, Coric’s teasing cross caused panic in the Lausanne box, but the Swiss defence scrambled the ball clear to preserve their lead until the final whistle.
