Giannis stays put as Bucks survive NBA trade deadline

Giannis Antetokounmpo will remain with the Milwaukee Bucks after the NBA trade deadline passed on Thursday, with the team opting to delay any potential move until the end of the season.
The 31-year-old Greek superstar, a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player and 10-time All-Star who helped lead Milwaukee to the 2021 championship, has been linked with trade speculation as the Bucks sit 20-29 this season.
Antetokounmpo, currently sidelined with a calf injury, is averaging 28.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game. Following the deadline, he posted on X: “Legends don’t chase. They attract,” alongside a meme from The Wolf of Wall Street, which the Bucks quickly shared.
Milwaukee is expected to explore potential trades for Antetokounmpo after the season, when the team could likely negotiate a better deal. The forward also has an option year on his contract after next season.
While Giannis stayed put, the Bucks were involved in a three-team trade, sending Cole Anthony and Amir Coffey to Phoenix in exchange for Nigel Hayes-Davis and Nick Richards. The deal also saw Jamaican centre Richards move to Chicago, while French forward Ousmane Dieng joined Milwaukee.
Other notable trades around the league included:
- Minnesota Timberwolves: Acquired guard Ayo Dosunmu from Chicago in a deal that sent Rob Dillingham, Leonard Miller, and four second-round picks to the Bulls. Dosunmu joins the Timberwolves’ plans to pair with star guard Anthony Edwards.
- Golden State Warriors: Traded Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield to Atlanta for Kristaps Porzingis.
- Memphis Grizzlies: Ja Morant remains with the team that drafted him second overall in 2019.
- Indiana Pacers: Received Ivica Zubac and Kobe Brown from the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Bennedict Mathurin, Isaiah Jackson, two first-round picks, and a second-rounder. Zubac, coming off career highs of 16.8 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 2.7 assists, replaces Myles Turner and will pair with Tyrese Haliburton next season.
The deadline also saw major moves involving superstar veterans:
- James Harden joined the Cleveland Cavaliers to partner with Donovan Mitchell.
- Anthony Davis was traded to Washington to team up with Trae Young.
Other transactions included:
- Boston sending Chris Boucher to Utah.
- Los Angeles Lakers acquiring guard Luke Kennard from Atlanta for Gabe Vincent and a 2032 second-round pick.
- New York trading Dalen Terry, cash, and two second-round picks to New Orleans for guard Jose Alvarado.
- Denver sending forward Hunter Tyson and a 2032 second-round pick to Brooklyn in exchange for a 2026 second-round pick; the Nets also acquired forward Josh Minott from Boston.
- Philadelphia trading Eric Gordon and a 2032 second-round pick swap to Memphis.
- Charlotte sending Tyus Jones to Dallas.
As the dust settles, Giannis remains with the Bucks, leaving Milwaukee and the league to plan the next moves in a season full of speculation and strategic positioning.
