De Leo welcomes key returns as Grech reflects on historic goal ahead of Poland clash

Coach Emilio De Leo addressed the media on MD-1 ahead of Malta’s final World Cup qualifying match against Poland, outlining the team’s physical condition and preparations. He explained that, due to travel commitments, today’s session will be the first and only opportunity to fully assess the squad before kickoff.
De Leo welcomed the return of Teddy Teuma and Ryan Camenzuli, describing their availability as “a major boost” for the group. He also spoke warmly about Jake Grech, whose late winner against Finland earned Malta a historic away victory. The coach highlighted Grech’s dedication and emotional investment, recalling a moment from last year when he left him out of the starting XI.
“He had tears in his eyes,” De Leo said. “That shows his character. Jake is a special footballer, and it’s no coincidence we continue to believe in him.”
Looking ahead to the challenge posed by Poland, De Leo insisted Malta must approach the match with conviction.
“We know the strength of the opponent, but we cannot enter the game as victims. We must express our qualities, remain positive, and not lose confidence. This window has given us something we did not have before — clear signs of growth, even beyond the results.”
Goal-scorer Jake Grech, who also spoke at the press conference, reflected on the significance of his first international goal.
“It was a double satisfaction — scoring and helping Malta win away for the first time in 12 years,” he said. “But throughout this group we often felt we could have taken more points, especially against Finland at home and in the matches with Lithuania.”
Grech described scoring for Malta as “an indescribable emotion” and a moment every player dreams of. Looking ahead to the meeting with Robert Lewandowski and the Polish squad, he said the team is relishing the opportunity.
“It’s always a chance to learn. Sharing the pitch with players of that calibre helps you grow.”
