Busy international window for Maltese officials with a series of appointments

Over the past few days, a number of Maltese officials were engaged in a series of international matches.
FIFA Series
FIFA Referee Ishmael Barbara was selected to officiate the FIFA Series match between Kazakhstan and Comoros on 31st March 2026 at the Astana Arena in Kazakhstan. He was assisted by FIFA Assistant Referees James Muscat and Duncan Spencer.
This was the first edition that Maltese match officials took part in this FIFA competition.
UEFA European U21 Championship Qualifiers
Maltese officials also took charge of a UEFA European U21 Championship Qualifier over the past few days.
FIFA Referee Matthew De Gabriele was selected to officiate the UEFA European U21 Championship Group G Qualifier between Israel and Bosnia and Herzegvovina on 31st March 2026. The encounter was held at the BSC Stadium in Budaörs, Hungary. FIFA Assistant Referees Jurgen Spiteri and David Castillo served as Assistant Referees, while Joseph Scerri was Fourth Official.
UEFA European U19 Championship Qualifiers
Additionally, Maltes officials were also appointed to officiate a number of matches from the UEFA European U19 Championship Qualifiers.
FIFA Referee Philip Farrugia, together with FIFA Assistant Referee Mark Ciantar were involved in a series of matches from Group 5, contested between Northern Ireland, Kazakhstan, Romania and Ukraine from 25th to 31st March 2026 in Romania.
In the match between Northern Ireland and Kazakhstan, FIFA Referee Philip Farrugia took charge of the encounter, with Mark Ciantar serving as one of the Assistant Referees, together with Raul Constantin Ghiciulescu (ROU), while George Catalin Roman (ROU) served as Fourth Official. FIFA Referee Philip Farrugia also served as Referee for the match between Kazakhstan and Romania, while Mark Ciantar served as Assistant Referee. Dyon Fikkert (NED) was also Assistant Referee, while Joey Kooij (NED) was Fourth Official. Additionally, Mark Ciantar was Assistant Referee in the match between Romania and Northern Ireland, assisting Lukasz Kuzma (POL) together with Bartosz Tomaszuk (POL), with Philip Farrugia serving as Fourth Official.
UEFA Women’s U17 Championship Qualifiers
In addition to this, FIFA Referee Joanna Vassallo was appointed to take charge of matches in the UEFA Women’s U17 Championship Qualifiers that are being held over the week.
Joanna Vassallo is taking charge of matches in Group B4, which consists of Moldova, Montenegro and Kazakhstan, with the mini-tournament being held in Montenegro.
She served as Referee in the match between Montenegro and Moldova that took place on 1st April 2026, being assisted by Sevda Nuriyeva (AZE) and Rusne Vasaryte (LTU), with Ugne Smitaite (LTU) as Fourth Official. Joanna Vassallo was also appointed Fourth Official for the match between Kazakhstan and Montenegro, which will take place on 7th April 2026, kicking off at 13:00hrs.
