Bayer Leverkusen eliminate Borussia Dortmund from German Cup as RB Leipzig progress

Bayer Leverkusen ended Borussia Dortmund’s long unbeaten home run on Tuesday, advancing to the German Cup quarter-finals with a 1-0 victory thanks to Ibrahim Maza’s first-half strike.
Dortmund, who had not lost at home since early March and had beaten Leverkusen 2-1 away in the Bundesliga just days earlier, were undone by hesitant defending that allowed the 20-year-old Maza to score in the 34th minute of the round-of-16 clash.
Leverkusen appeared to double their advantage in the 62nd minute when Martin Terrier’s side-footed effort hit the net, but VAR ruled it out for offside. Nevertheless, the visitors held on to secure their place in the last eight.
RB Leipzig also booked their quarter-final spot, overcoming an early penalty conceded to FC Magdeburg with a comfortable 3-1 home win. Christoph Baumgartner scored twice to lead Leipzig’s charge.
Both matches began with 12 minutes of silence from supporters, protesting proposed changes to security measures at German football matches.
Elsewhere on Tuesday, Louis Oppie scored a late winner seven minutes from time as St. Pauli defeated Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-1 away. In a second-tier clash, Hertha Berlin’s 16-year-old Kennet Eichhorn became the youngest scorer in post-war German Cup history, contributing the third goal in a 6-1 rout of Kaiserslautern.
