Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis has suffered ligament damage in his left hand and is consulting with medical staff to determine whether surgery is necessary, a procedure that could keep him sidelined for several months.

Scans on Friday revealed the full extent of the injury Davis sustained during the Mavericks’ loss to the Utah Jazz on Thursday.

If Davis opts against surgery, he is expected to be out for at least six weeks, but a surgical procedure could extend his recovery period significantly.

The 32-year-old, a 10-time NBA All-Star, has also been linked to trade speculation with the league’s February 5 trade deadline approaching.

Davis joined Dallas last season in a blockbuster trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. However, injuries have limited his impact. He has appeared in just 29 regular-season games and two play-in contests, arriving in Dallas still recovering from an abdominal issue.

This season, Davis has also missed time due to a calf strain and groin injury, and he previously sat out six weeks with an adductor strain. The star forward’s recurring injury problems continue to cast uncertainty over his availability for the remainder of the season.
