Tottenham Hotspur’s January transfer window is off to a busy start, with an agreement in principle to sign Brazilian teenager Souza, marking what could be the first move in a hectic month for the club.

Spurs are reportedly working with a budget of up to £100 million this window, and the Souza deal offers an early glimpse into how they plan to deploy those funds.

The 19-year-old may not yet be a household name, but Tottenham see him as a high-potential talent who fits their long-term vision. An attack-minded left-sided defender, Souza’s style aligns with the club’s ambition to play a proactive, front-footed game—a quality Spurs fans have been craving under Thomas Frank.

The transfer is expected to be completed for around €15 million, with Souza set to arrive in London by Monday to finalise the move. While he won’t instantly grab headlines, Spurs view the signing as a key building block for 2026, addressing a frustrating first half of the season and signalling decisive recruitment strategy.

Left-back reinforcements have been a priority since late December, and discussions accelerated rapidly after the New Year, with Tottenham entering formal talks with Souza’s club, Santos, and submitting opening offers.

Recruiting from Brazil in January can be tricky due to adaptation periods, but Tottenham believe Souza’s quality makes it worth acting now. Other European and English clubs had expressed interest, prompting Spurs to move swiftly.

Negotiations began around €8 million but escalated to nearly double before the agreement on Thursday.

With Souza close to joining, Tottenham are expected to focus on other areas of the squad, particularly the left side of their attack, with progress on another forward anticipated next week.
