Suryakumar Yadav says teammate Shreyas Iyer is making good recovery from serious injury

India’s Shreyas Iyer is in stable condition and recovering well from a serious spleen injury sustained during the third one-day international against Australia, Twenty20 captain Suryakumar Yadav said on Tuesday.
The 30-year-old batsman suffered a lacerated spleen while attempting a catch in India’s victory on Saturday. He was immediately taken to hospital, with local media describing the injury as potentially life-threatening.
“We spoke to him,” Suryakumar told reporters ahead of India’s five-match T20 series against Australia, which begins in Canberra on Wednesday. “When we got to know about his injury, I called him. Then I realised Shreyas didn’t have his phone on him, so I called our physio, Kamlesh Jain, who told us he’s stable.
“He’s looking good now. We’ve been in touch for two days — he’s replying. If he’s able to reply on the phone, then he’s stable,” Suryakumar added.
Iyer’s injury came at an unfortunate time for the right-hander, who had been working to cement his place in India’s middle order following a strong domestic season. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to confirm how long he will be sidelined.
Suryakumar also provided an update on all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who missed the final ODI with a quadriceps injury. “He’s doing fine,” the skipper said. “He did a bit of running and batting in the nets yesterday. Today he wanted to take a break as it was optional practice, but we came to the ground for a team meeting.”
India are entering the T20 series against Australia on the back of a packed schedule, having recently competed in the Asia Cup and the ODI series. Suryakumar said the team remains upbeat despite the injuries.
“We’re regrouping after the Asia Cup,” he said. “The team looks good and the atmosphere is good. We had fun on the ground over the last two days, so we’re looking forward to this series.”
