Canada’s Gabriel Diallo advanced to the second round of the Rolex Paris Masters on Monday with a confident 6-3, 6-4 victory over an out-of-sorts Tallon Griekspoor.

Griekspoor, ranked No. 25 in the world, was returning to action after retiring from last week’s Vienna quarter-finals due to a back injury — an issue that again appeared to trouble him in Paris. The Dutchman struggled to find rhythm on serve, opening the door for Diallo to dominate large stretches of the match.

Diallo, who fell in the first round in Basel last week, capitalised quickly as Griekspoor landed only 40% of his first serves in the opening set. The Canadian broke three times — including two love games — and wrapped up the set on his fourth set point despite a late fightback from his opponent.

Griekspoor steadied his serve in the second set, improving his first-serve percentage to 73%, but continued to lack the mobility and confidence needed to mount a sustained challenge. After saving two early break points, Diallo broke in the fifth game to seize control and never looked back, closing out the match in one hour and 23 minutes.

The victory marks Diallo’s fourth consecutive appearance in the second round of an ATP Masters 1000 event — a sign of the 22-year-old’s growing consistency on the tour. He will next face sixth seed Alex de Minaur for a place in the round of 16.
