Arsenal head into their Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid on a remarkable run, unbeaten since August and sitting three points clear at the top of the Premier League. Despite their strong form — including two wins from two in Europe — manager Mikel Arteta was quick to dismiss suggestions that his side are favourites in the domestic title race.

“The only thing I embrace is when I see the team’s energy, their commitment, and the quality they can deliver,” Arteta told reporters on Monday. “That gives me the conviction that we can go all the way. But that’s just a feeling — the next day, you have to prove it again. You can’t get distracted thinking about those things.”

Arteta stressed the importance of consistency, adding: “Every Premier League game is must-win. We know that and we stay humble — we don’t get carried away.”

The Spaniard also addressed a viral social media clip showing defender William Saliba watching Atletico Madrid’s match on the team bus after Arsenal’s 1-0 victory at Fulham.

“I was very pleased because I didn’t encourage that — it came from them,” Arteta said. “We know how tough this next game will be, so the earlier we start preparing, the better. I love that kind of initiative from the players.”

Admiration for Simeone

Arteta was full of praise for Atletico manager Diego Simeone, describing the Argentine as one of the most impressive figures in modern football.

“What he’s done since taking charge at Atletico is outstanding — not just the results but the identity he’s built,” Arteta said. “You can instantly recognise his teams because they reflect him completely. That’s very difficult to achieve. Fourteen years at one club and still competing at the top — that’s incredible.”

“He’s someone I look up to,” he continued. “His passion, his longevity, and the way he continues to inspire his players to win — in this environment, that takes something extraordinary.”

Arteta also confirmed that defender Piero Hincapié is fit to return from a groin injury and will be available for Tuesday night’s showdown at the Emirates Stadium.
