How the Netherlands Qualified for the 2026 World Cup
The Netherlands qualified by topping UEFA Group G with an unbeaten record during the qualifying campaign. Koeman’s men combined defensive solidity with attacking quality, comfortably finishing ahead of rivals such as Poland. Their campaign included dominant victories over Malta, Finland and Lithuania, while only Poland managed to take points from them in draws home and away.
One of the standout performances came in an emphatic 8-0 victory against Malta, where the Dutch attack completely overwhelmed their opponents.
The Dutch squad displayed excellent balance throughout qualification. Virgil van Dijk led the defence superbly, Frenkie de Jong controlled matches in midfield, while Memphis Depay and Cody Gakpo delivered goals at crucial moments. Ronald Koeman praised the depth and quality of his players after qualification was secured.

Netherlands World Cup History
The Netherlands have long been regarded as one of the strongest football nations never to win the FIFA World Cup. Despite producing world-class teams across multiple generations, they have suffered heartbreak on several occasions.
The Dutch reached their first final in 1974 under the leadership of Johan Cruyff. Playing revolutionary attacking football, they captivated audiences around the world before losing 2-1 to West Germany in the final.
Four years later, they reached the 1978 final in Argentina but were defeated once again after extra time.
Their third appearance in a World Cup final came in 2010 under Bert van Marwijk. Led by Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie, the Dutch narrowly lost 1-0 to Spain after extra time in Johannesburg.
The Netherlands also enjoyed strong tournaments in 1998, reaching the semi-finals, and in 2014, when Louis van Gaal guided them to third place after an unforgettable 5-1 victory over Spain in the group stage.
At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the Dutch reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated by eventual champions Argentina on penalties after a dramatic comeback.
Can the Dutch Finally Win It?
The Netherlands arrive at the 2026 World Cup with a talented and balanced squad capable of competing with the very best nations. Their defence is among the strongest in international football, their midfield is technically outstanding, and they possess exciting attacking players capable of changing matches instantly.
However, questions remain over whether they have enough cutting edge in attack to defeat the elite sides deep into the tournament. Even so, Oranje supporters will travel with genuine belief that this could finally be the year the Netherlands end their long wait for football’s ultimate prize.
