It’s a decisive weekend in the Betway Premiership, with a full round of fixtures scheduled and the spotlight firmly on the eagerly awaited Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday.

While the derby will dominate headlines, the remaining seven matches across the weekend also carry major significance, with points crucial in the battles for CAF competition places, MTN8 qualification, and survival at the bottom of the table.

All eyes on the Soweto Derby

The Soweto derby is the standout fixture of the round, with both sides arriving in strong form.

Chiefs are fresh off their Nedbank Cup triumph over Pirates last season, but in league meetings it is the Buccaneers who have held the upper hand, winning six of the last seven encounters. That run marks one of their most dominant spells in the fixture since its inception in 1970.

Chiefs, however, come into the match with momentum of their own, having picked up 16 points from the last 18 available. That run has effectively secured them third place in the standings and reflects a sharp upturn in form.

Pirates, meanwhile, are under pressure in the title race. They currently sit at the top of the table but only a point ahead of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns, having played an extra game. With no margin for error, anything less than victory could prove costly.

When the teams met in February, Pirates ran out 3-0 winners, although Chiefs were heavily affected by injuries that day and are expected to present a much stronger challenge this time around.

Draws have been rare in this fixture, with no stalemate in the last 17 competitive meetings since 2019. Over that period, Pirates have won nine and Chiefs eight, with the last draw coming in a 2-2 Telkom Knockout clash in November 2019.

Sundowns eye top spot again

Elsewhere, Mamelodi Sundowns will be aiming to bounce back when they travel to face Richards Bay FC on Sunday.

The reigning champions were held to a 1-1 draw by Stellenbosch FC in midweek, ending a run of 10 straight league wins. With fixtures coming thick and fast, squad depth and consistency will be tested in the final stretch of the season.

Sundowns also face a demanding schedule ahead, including home-and-away meetings with Polokwane City FC as they look to finish their league campaign before preparing for the CAF Champions League Final.

Historically, Sundowns have completely dominated Richards Bay, winning all 10 previous encounters while scoring 25 goals and conceding just three. However, this will be their first away trip to Richards Bay since December 2024, with recent meetings all taking place in Pretoria.

A crucial weekend ahead

With title pressure, continental qualification, and relegation battles all intertwined, this weekend promises to have a major impact across the table. Yet, as always, it is the Soweto derby that will set the tone for the entire round.
