The Malta Football Association is pleased to announce that referee Ishmael Barbara has been selected to participate in UEFA’s prestigious Talent & Mentor Programme for the 2026/27 season. As part of this programme, Barbara is currently attending the official kick-off meeting taking place in Switzerland from 20th to 23rd April 2026.

This programme, which runs over the course of one year and concludes in April 2027, is designed to support the development of Europe’s most promising refereeing talents. Barbara’s inclusion follows his recent promotion to UEFA Category One and his identification by UEFA as a referee with significant potential for further progression at the international level.

Participation in the Talent & Mentor Programme represents a key step in Barbara’s career. It will provide him with tailored guidance, high-level technical support, and exposure to elite refereeing standards, all of which are essential for continued development and advancement within UEFA competitions.

Barbara has been assigned UEFA Coach Terje Hauge, a highly respected figure in European refereeing. Hauge, a former FIFA referee from Norway, officiated at the highest levels of the game, including the UEFA Champions League Final in 2006. Since retiring, he has held important roles within UEFA’s refereeing structure, contributing extensively to the education and development of top referees across Europe. His experience and expertise will be invaluable in guiding Barbara throughout the programme.

This appointment also reflects the ongoing progress and growing reputation of Maltese refereeing within UEFA.

The Malta Football Association congratulates Ishmael Barbara on this achievement and wishes him continued success as he embarks on this important project in his refereeing career.
