Sandro Tonali double sparks Newcastle United comeback against 10-man Aston Villa in FA Cup

Newcastle United came from behind to beat 10-man Aston Villa 3-1 on Saturday, as a superb double from Sandro Tonali booked their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Neither side has lifted the famous trophy since the 1950s, and another chance for Unai Emery’s Villa to end a three-decade wait for major silverware slipped away following a pivotal first-half red card for goalkeeper Marco Bizot.
Villa had made the brighter start and were rewarded when Tammy Abraham fired the hosts in front with his first goal since returning to the club last month, finishing confidently to ignite the home crowd.
The momentum shifted dramatically soon after. Bizot raced off his line in an attempt to thwart Jacob Murphy but instead wiped out the Newcastle winger and was shown a straight red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Newcastle’s resurgence also spared the officials from further scrutiny following a controversial moment when Lucas Digne handled inside the penalty area, only for a free-kick to be awarded just outside the box. With VAR not in use at this stage of the competition, the decision stood.
The Magpies made the most of the reprieve regardless. From the resulting free-kick, Tonali’s effort took a deflection and looped beyond the stranded Emiliano Martinez to bring the visitors level.
Linked with a potential move to Arsenal at the end of the season, Tonali underlined his quality by completing the turnaround with a thunderous strike from distance, leaving Villa’s depleted side reeling.
Nick Woltemade then sealed the victory with his first goal in 15 appearances, ensuring Newcastle — who last won the FA Cup in 1955 — advanced to the last 16 in emphatic fashion after a stirring second-half fightback.
