Manchester City cruise past Salford City in FA Cup as third-tier Mansfield Town shock Burnley

Marc Guehi scored his first goal for Manchester City to secure a 2-0 victory over minnows Salford City in the fourth round of the FA Cup, while Burnley suffered a shock exit at the hands of Mansfield Town on Saturday.
Owned by former Manchester United stars Gary Neville and David Beckham, Salford were appearing in the fourth round for the first time in their history and relished the occasion at the Etihad Stadium.
Pep Guardiola’s side made a swift start, taking the lead after just six minutes. Rayan Ait-Nouri’s cross was destined for Omar Marmoush before Salford defender Alfie Dorrington inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net.
Having thrashed Salford 8-0 in last season’s third round, City supporters might have expected another avalanche of goals. Instead, the Premier League champions laboured against their determined fourth-tier opponents.
City struggled to build rhythm and were fortunate not to be pegged back when Ben Woodburn forced a save from James Trafford to preserve the advantage. Brandon Cooper then squandered a gilt-edged chance to equalise, heading wide from Luke Garbutt’s corner on the stroke of half-time.
Remarkably, Guardiola’s men failed to register a shot on target in the opening period, and Salford continued to threaten after the interval. Kelly N’Mai’s fierce effort was parried by Trafford as the underdogs sensed an opportunity.
The contest remained finely poised until the 81st minute, when Guehi finally extinguished Salford’s resistance. After Matt Young palmed Rayan Cherki’s delivery into his path, the defender reacted quickest to tap home his maiden goal since arriving from Crystal Palace in January.
“They defended really well, so tight and we didn’t attack the spaces the way we should. The game was flat until we scored the second goal,” Guardiola admitted afterwards.
“It has been a really tough three weeks with a lot of games and it’s demanding.”
Mansfield dump out Burnley
At Turf Moor, Mansfield produced one of the round’s biggest upsets, defeating Burnley 2-1 to reach the fifth round for the first time since 1975.
Burnley entered the tie buoyed by a midweek Premier League victory over Crystal Palace, but manager Scott Parker made nine changes to his line-up — a gamble that ultimately backfired.
The hosts struck first through Josh Laurent’s 21st-minute effort, seemingly placing themselves on course for progression. However, Nigel Clough’s League One side — sitting comfortably in mid-table — responded impressively after the break.
Rhys Oates levelled with a well-taken header in the 53rd minute before Louis Reed completed the turnaround 10 minutes from time, curling in a superb free-kick to seal a famous victory and spark jubilant scenes among the travelling supporters.
