Vit Krejci wows fans in first game for Portland after trade

Vít Krejci made a solid first impression in his debut for the Portland Trail Blazers after being traded from the Atlanta Hawks, moving across the country and three time zones to join his new team.
Coach Chauncey Billups wasted no time putting the Czech guard on the court against the Phoenix Suns. Krejci logged nearly 14 minutes, contributing a beautiful three-pointer, a quick assist, and a smart finish.
“It all happened so fast. I’m still in a bit of a transition period, getting used to the arena and the environment — I’ve only been here two days. But it felt great to be out there with the guys and just play,” Krejci told reporters.
Krejci had to wait until the end of the second quarter for his first basket, missing his initial three shots. When he finally drained an impressive three-pointer, the crowd and his new teammates erupted in celebration.
“Yeah! In that moment, it felt amazing,” Krejci said. “It wasn’t my best shooting night — I’ve had a couple of crazy days. A few shots were short, but once my legs are back under me, I’ll get back to my usual self.”
After traveling more than 4,500 kilometers from east to west, he admitted fatigue and adjusting to the time zone were factors. “I just need to get some sleep. I’ve got two more days until the next game, I’ll hit the gym, get my legs right, and I’ll be fine soon,” he explained.
Portland is currently fighting to hold a play-in spot and has endured a six-game losing streak, but Krejci remains optimistic. “You have to stay positive. The season is long, everyone goes through ups and downs. I felt today we played better than in previous games. Now it’s about clearing our heads and focusing on the next game,” he said.
The Czech guard was also impressed by the Blazers’ style of play. “I really enjoyed how fast and aggressive we played. It’s all about movement, playing off the ball, and passing. That style, where everyone shares the ball and keeps the pace up, is really fun. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season,” he said.
Krejci now faces a period of learning the team’s systems and defensive schemes while building chemistry with teammates and staff. But he’s confident about integrating smoothly.
“From the first minute here, everyone — coaches, players, the whole organization — has supported me and made the transition as easy as possible. That really helps you build confidence,” he said.
Even when shots don’t go in, Krejci has felt the team’s support. “‘Hey, keep shooting, that’s what we want. We believe in you,’” he recalled hearing from teammates and coaches. “It’s always easier when you get that kind of positive feedback,” he added with a smile.
