Donovan Mitchell poured in 25 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers cruised to a 129-99 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday, spoiling what could be LeBron James’ final appearance in Cleveland.

James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, has yet to commit to playing beyond this season — his 23rd in the league — raising speculation that this may have been his last game in front of his hometown fans as a visiting player.

The 41-year-old, who led Cleveland to their only NBA title in 2016, finished with 11 points, five assists, three rebounds and a steal in 27 minutes. He received a rapturous reception from a sold-out crowd and appeared emotional during a pre-game tribute on the videoboard.

“There are certainly always emotions for him coming back here,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said. “You could see how much this meant to him. There’s a human element to all of this.”

Mitchell acknowledged that despite the Cavaliers’ dominant display — their fifth straight win, improving them to 29-20 — the night belonged to James.

“He has laid the foundation,” Mitchell said. “He’s done so much for this city. He deserves that energy. We’re trying to build on what he started and bring another championship here.”

Jaylon Tyson contributed 20 points for Cleveland, while De’Andre Hunter added 19 off the bench. Luka Dončić led the Lakers with 29 points, and Bronny James scored eight.

“It was cool for him to have that moment here,” teammate Gabe Vincent said of LeBron.

James, who had averaged 28 points in his previous 24 games against the Cavs as a visitor, was well contained by Tyson.

“I fear no man,” Tyson said. “He’s a great player, and that was my challenge today.”

The Cavaliers seized control in the third quarter, outscoring the Lakers 42-22 to build a commanding 99-77 lead. They shot 7-of-11 from three-point range and 17-of-25 overall in the period.

“We came out with energy and reaped the benefits,” Tyson said.

Redick was blunt in his assessment of the Lakers’ performance.

“We got outplayed. I got outcoached,” he said. “We didn’t have our juice.”

Cleveland were without reigning Defensive Player of the Year Evan Mobley due to a calf strain, but Mitchell said the team was ready to adapt.

“With Evan out, more is required of us,” he said. “We’re ready to step up.”

Elsewhere in the NBA, Pascal Siakam scored 20 points as Indiana edged Chicago 113-110, Paolo Banchero posted 31 points and 12 rebounds in Orlando’s 133-124 win at Miami, and Mikal Bridges led New York with 30 points in a 119-92 victory over Toronto.
