Forest emerge as frontrunners for Mateta with £35m offer

Jean-Philippe Mateta has become one of the most sought-after players of the transfer window, with Nottingham Forest stepping up their efforts to secure his signature from Crystal Palace.
Forest have submitted a bid in the region of £35 million, underlining their ambition in a market that has also attracted interest from European heavyweights including AC Milan, Juventus and Aston Villa.
According to sources, Mateta has been receptive to the idea of a high-profile move and was particularly interested in a switch to Serie A. Juventus explored a potential deal in depth but are currently unable to compete financially, having preferred a loan with an obligation to buy rather than a permanent transfer. Palace, however, have made it clear they favour a straight sale.
AC Milan are facing similar budgetary limitations, leaving Forest well placed to take control of the race for the striker as they look to fend off any late challengers.
Despite some surprise in certain quarters at Mateta’s willingness to consider a move to the City Ground, Forest remain confident and believe they are in a strong position as talks continue.
The French forward is understood to be eager to raise his profile, strengthen his case for international selection, and secure improved contract terms. Playing in the Champions League had also featured among his long-term ambitions.
Nevertheless, Forest — currently 17th in the Premier League, two places below Palace — have demonstrated a clear determination to finalise the deal.
Meanwhile, Crystal Palace are already preparing for the possibility of Mateta’s departure and are assessing potential replacements, with Jorgen Strand Larsen among the names being considered.
Juventus have acknowledged that a move is not feasible under the present conditions. After also missing out on Youssef En-Nesyri, the Italian giants are now monitoring alternative attacking options, including Federico Chiesa and Joshua Zirkzee.
They have also made enquiries about Randal Kolo Muani to determine whether Tottenham would be willing to terminate his loan early.
