Kompany insists Bayern Munich will not underestimate Union Saint-Gilloise ahead of clash

Bayern Munich should not take Union Saint-Gilloise lightly in Wednesday’s Champions League clash, with the Belgian side comfortable in their underdog role, head coach Vincent Kompany has warned.
The Bavarians have been in formidable form throughout the campaign and are closing in on a top-eight finish in the Champions League’s league phase, which would secure automatic qualification for the round of 16. Bayern sit second on 15 points with two matches remaining.
Domestically, Kompany’s side are unbeaten in the Bundesliga and hold an 11-point lead at the summit after a thrilling 5-1 comeback victory away at RB Leipzig on Saturday. That match also marked the return of playmaker Jamal Musiala, who came off the bench after six months out with a broken leg and ankle.
With a 16-3 goal difference from their three competitive matches in 2026, Bayern appear to be firing on all cylinders. However, Kompany insists Wednesday’s encounter will be far from straightforward.
“I was probably the first to say in a press conference, when I was coaching Anderlecht, that they were doing very good work,” Kompany told reporters. “I said then: ‘This is not an easy opponent, they will be playing for titles very soon.’
“What I mean is that they work extremely hard, they have talented players, and they are a club that has understood their underdog role for years and uses it well. I have a lot of respect for them.”
Union Saint-Gilloise currently sit top of the Belgian Pro League but face a battle in Europe, where they are pushing for a top-24 finish that would secure a playoff place for the knockout rounds. They are 27th in the Champions League standings with six points.
Despite their position, Kompany believes Union remain a threat, particularly away from home, even as Bayern have won five of their six Champions League matches this season.
“They are underdogs, they are compact, and they can produce those heroic moments,” Kompany added. “No club in Belgium has done it better than them over the past five years.”
