Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso has hailed Kylian Mbappé as a key figure for the team, highlighting that the French superstar contributes far beyond his goal-scoring exploits.

Mbappé netted four goals against Olympiacos in last week’s Champions League clash and has already scored 23 times in 19 appearances across all competitions this season.

In recent weeks, the striker has also urged the squad to stay united amid Madrid’s inconsistent form under Alonso.

“He’s been very good individually, helping the team a lot,” Alonso said at a news conference ahead of Wednesday’s La Liga trip to Athletic Bilbao. “It’s not just about goals for Kylian, which are obviously crucial, but he also brings leadership, influence, and support for his teammates, which is hugely important on a daily basis.”

Madrid currently sit one point behind champions Barcelona after a third consecutive league draw on Sunday against Girona, prompting speculation in Spanish media over Alonso’s future as coach if the team fails to improve.

Alonso admitted he has recently spoken with Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez about addressing the team’s form.

“The conversations are very positive, in a good tone, focused on improving results, and that’s what we’ve discussed,” said the Basque coach. “I think we’ve lacked consistency in our play, and we want to perform better in the next match. We’ve lost a bit of quality and energy in our game.”
