Wirtz nets first for Liverpool as reds defeat Wolves amid Jota tributes

Liverpool closed out 2025 with a 2-1 Premier League victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield, extending their remarkable record against Wolves to 17 wins in the last 18 league encounters.
The Reds came into the fixture on the back of consecutive league wins—their first back-to-back PL victories since September—signaling a potential turnaround after a difficult start to the season.
Before kick-off, a poignant moment unfolded as Diogo Jota’s children walked out alongside Virgil van Dijk, with the crowd applauding in unison while Jota’s wife watched from the sideline.
Liverpool dominated early on and were close to taking the lead inside 11 minutes. Florian Wirtz played a perfect through ball to Hugo Ekitike, but the in-form striker’s effort cannoned off the post. Wolves had their first chance shortly after, as 18-year-old Mateus Mané held off Curtis Jones before firing a shot that Alisson kept out.
Liverpool’s pressure paid off on 41 minutes when Jeremy Frimpong’s cutback was met by Ryan Gravenberch, who slotted home. A minute later, Ekitike set up Wirtz, and the German converted his first Premier League goal with a composed finish.
Wolves pulled one back early in the second half after Santiago Bueno scored from a rebound following Tolu Arokodare’s saved header from a corner, giving them a glimmer of hope.
Liverpool pressed to restore their two-goal cushion, with Wirtz narrowly missing and Jones denied from long range, but they ultimately held on to claim victory. The win marks Liverpool’s 18th triumph in their last 21 top-flight matches between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Wolves, meanwhile, remain without a win in their last 22 Premier League games (D3, L19), capping a difficult end to 2025 as they prepare to face Manchester United in three days.
