Mamelodi Sundowns have rarely found themselves conceding four goals in a league match, underlining their long-standing defensive dominance in South African football. The most recent instance came in a remarkable 7–4 league encounter against Siwelele on 9 May 2026, a match that stood out as an unusual high-scoring affair for the reigning powerhouses.

Despite the rare defensive lapse, Sundowns still managed to come out on top in that game, but it highlighted just how uncommon it is for them to concede at such a rate in domestic competition.

Historically, Sundowns have built their success on defensive stability, meaning games where they allow four goals are extremely infrequent. Across the Premier Soccer League era, such occurrences have only happened a handful of times, reinforcing their reputation as one of the most consistent defensive teams in the country.

Overall, the Siwelele match remains the most recent and notable example of Sundowns conceding four goals in a league fixture, and it continues to be viewed as an outlier in their otherwise strong defensive record.

The highest number of goals scored by a team in a single league match in the PSL era stands at eight. That record has been achieved twice — first by SuperSport United in an 8-1 win over AmaZulu (then known as Zulu Royals) in 2004, and later by Orlando Pirates in an 8-1 victory against Marumo Gallants in 2024, a match that was level at 1-1 at half-time before turning into a one-sided contest.

A more intriguing angle, however, is how often Mamelodi Sundowns have conceded four or more goals in a league fixture.

While they did suffer a 4-3 defeat to Borussia Dortmund at the FIFA Club World Cup last year, such heavy concession in domestic league football is far less common.

Their most recent league example came 11 years ago, when they were surprisingly beaten 5-0 by Bloemfontein Celtic (a club later linked to the ownership structure of Royal AM). The result was widely seen as unexpected, especially given Celtic’s inconsistent form at the time.

Despite that, Celtic had a strong psychological edge over Sundowns and produced a dominant performance on the day — marking one of the heaviest defeats of former coach Pitso Mosimane’s tenure.

Mamelodi Sundowns have had a handful of rare defensive collapses over the past three decades, with several matches standing out where they conceded four or more goals.

One of the most notable came in 2011, when they were involved in a thrilling 4-4 draw with Ajax Cape Town. A few years earlier, they also shipped four in defeats to Bidvest Wits (2-4) and SuperSport United (1-4) in 2009, as well as against Golden Arrows (2-4) and Free State Stars (0-4) in 2008. That period is widely viewed as one of their more vulnerable defensive phases.

The struggles continued earlier in the decade, including a 3-4 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs in 2005, preceded by a 2-5 loss to Golden Arrows in another high-scoring encounter. They also suffered 1-4 defeats in 2002, 0-4 losses to SuperSport United in 1998, and a 1-4 defeat to Umtata Bush Bucks in 1999.

More recently, the 7–4 clash involving Siwelele has placed them among a small group of teams to have scored four goals against Sundowns in the last 30 years. Unusually, Siwelele also became the only side in that period to score four against Sundowns and still end up losing the match.

Overall, while such results are rare in modern times, these past fixtures highlight that even a dominant side like Sundowns has experienced occasional defensive lapses throughout their PSL history.
