Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim voiced his frustration over his team’s failure to finish the job after surrendering a lead in a 1-1 draw with struggling West Ham on Thursday.

United remain eighth in the Premier League — only two points off a top-four spot — but the Portuguese coach believes his side should be far better placed. Recent matches against Tottenham and Nottingham Forest also saw United take the lead but fail to collect maximum points, while they suffered a damaging 1-0 defeat to 10-man Everton at Old Trafford in their previous home outing.

“We should have killed the game off by keeping the ball because the win was there for us,” Amorim said.

“The match was under control. We knew we had to defend high up the pitch as any set piece could cause problems.

“But we couldn’t do it, we couldn’t keep possession, and once again we’ve dropped two points.”

Diogo Dalot put United ahead just before the hour mark, yet Amorim’s irritation was clear when Soungoutou Magassa headed in from a corner seven minutes from time to rescue a point for West Ham.

“The overall performance wasn’t perfect. We had good spells but we lost control at times in the first half and again after we scored,” Amorim added.

“It’s extremely frustrating because when you look at the match, it was in our hands — and we still didn’t win.”
