Villarreal moved up to second place in LaLiga with a commanding 4–0 win over Rayo Vallecano at the Estadio de la Cerámica, extending their unbeaten home run in the league this season.

The match began with high intensity from both sides. The first clear chance came in the 12th minute when Rayo’s Alemao saw his close-range header brilliantly pushed away by goalkeeper Luiz Júnior.

The hosts broke the deadlock midway through the first half thanks to a moment of magic from Gerard Moreno, who turned sharply inside the box before firing home his second LaLiga goal of the campaign.

Both teams continued to play with attacking intent until halftime, registering seven shots apiece, but a series of strong defensive interventions kept the scoreline tight heading into the break.

Eight minutes after the restart, Villarreal fans were left stunned when Nicolas Pépé blazed a golden chance over the bar from six yards — a contender for miss of the season. The error proved inconsequential, however, as Marcelino’s side soon took full control.

In the 56th minute, Alberto Moleiro doubled Villarreal’s lead with a superb long-range strike into the bottom corner after being afforded too much space in midfield. Just two minutes later, Santi Comesaña made it 3–0, coolly finishing after a clever assist from Moleiro.

With Rayo reeling, the hosts struck again. Substitute Ayoze Pérez capitalized on sloppy defending to slot home his first league goal of the season, sealing a rampant second-half display.

Villarreal nearly added a fifth in the final moments when Dani Parejo’s curling free-kick clipped the crossbar in the 89th minute.

The emphatic victory — Villarreal’s third consecutive win in all competitions — lifts them to second in the table, four points behind leaders Real Madrid, though having played a game more.

For Rayo Vallecano, it was a sobering evening. Head coach Íñigo Pérez will be frustrated by his team’s collapse after the interval, especially given their six-match unbeaten run leading into this fixture.
