Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has vowed to “protect” teenage star Lamine Yamal following recent criticism of his performances.

The 18-year-old winger struggled in last weekend’s Clasico as Barcelona suffered a defeat that left them five points behind LaLiga leaders Real Madrid. Yamal also drew attention for pre-match comments suggesting that Madrid “steal (and) complain,” which angered Los Blancos supporters and sparked media scrutiny.

“We speak openly with him… we are very honest with each other, he with me and I with him, and this is the best way,” Flick said at a news conference ahead of Barca’s La Liga clash with Elche on Sunday.

“I will always protect him and support him. He’s a fantastic player, a fantastic person, very young, and we will continue like this.”

Yamal has been managing a groin injury for several weeks. Although he started the Clasico, his performance was subdued, and he still appears affected by the issue.

“Lamine is doing well. I just spoke with him,” Flick added. “Of course, some days he feels pain, but he’s working hard and has improved a lot. His evolution is positive, and that’s what matters.”

The German coach also confirmed that Robert Lewandowski and Dani Olmo are back from injury, while Barcelona remain without key players such as Pedri, Gavi, and Joan Garcia.

“Having Dani and Lewy back has raised the level in training,” Flick noted. “It’s not just about their quality; it also pushes the young players to improve. It’s nice to see, and hopefully we can show it on the pitch tomorrow.”

Barcelona will host Elche at the Olympic Stadium. The promoted side, managed by former Barca assistant coach Eder Sarabia, have been strong this season, suffering only two defeats and playing “fantastic football,” according to Flick.
