Real Madrid captain Federico Valverde delivered a sensational performance, scoring the first professional hat-trick of his career as Los Blancos secured a commanding 3–0 victory over Manchester City in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie.

Having eliminated City from the competition in each of the previous two seasons, Real Madrid entered the contest with a clear psychological advantage as they looked to reach the quarter-finals for the eighth time in nine campaigns.

Despite that recent history, it was Manchester City who began the match slightly brighter. The visitors showed early attacking intent, but Jeremy Doku’s dangerous deliveries into the box repeatedly lacked a finishing touch.

Real Madrid soon settled into their rhythm, and their first real opportunity brought the opening goal. Thibaut Courtois launched a long ball forward that found Valverde charging down the right flank. The Uruguayan burst into the box, nudged the ball past Nico O’Reilly and Gianluigi Donnarumma, and calmly rolled it into the empty net.

Valverde was far from finished. Just before the half-hour mark, Vinícius Júnior surged forward from the left and slipped a clever reverse pass into Valverde’s path. The midfielder struck first-time with his left foot, sending a precise finish across goal and into the bottom corner to double Madrid’s lead.

Already enjoying one of the best nights of his career, the Madrid captain completed a memorable hat-trick moments later. Brahim Díaz produced a delicate chipped pass into the penalty area, and Valverde responded brilliantly by flicking the ball over a helpless Marc Guéhi before tapping past Donnarumma to seal his third goal of the night.

Manchester City entered the break facing an uphill battle, and things could have worsened shortly after the restart. Vinícius Júnior raced clear on goal and was brought down as he attempted to round Donnarumma, earning Real Madrid a penalty. However, the Italian goalkeeper redeemed himself by diving to his left to keep out the Brazilian’s spot-kick.

Real Madrid continued to dominate much of the second half but were reminded of City’s threat late on. Courtois produced a stunning reflex save to push a close-range effort over the bar after Nico O’Reilly capitalised on a defensive mistake by Thiago Pitarch inside the area.

City attempted a late push in the closing minutes, yet they ultimately failed to score for the first time since mid-January.

The result leaves Pep Guardiola’s side with a huge task ahead in the second leg, though they will hope to draw inspiration from their famous 4–0 home win over Real Madrid in 2023 — the last time they defeated the Spanish giants in a two-legged tie.

For Real Madrid, the emphatic victory provides a timely boost after a run of inconsistent form. However, manager Álvaro Arbeloa will know that the tie is far from over ahead of the return leg in Manchester.
