Five-star PSG earn first-leg advantage against Chelsea in seven-goal thriller

Paris Saint-Germain will take a commanding three-goal lead to London next week after defeating Chelsea 5–2 in a thrilling UEFA Champions League last-16 first-leg clash at the Parc des Princes. The result leaves the Blues with just two wins in nine Champions League meetings with the French champions (D3, L4).
In a repeat of last year’s Club World Cup final, PSG looked determined to avenge that defeat and started brightly against Liam Rosenior’s side. The opening stages were played at a frantic pace, with both teams creating early half-chances before the hosts eventually broke the deadlock.
The breakthrough arrived when João Neves cushioned a header back across goal, allowing Bradley Barcola to fire a clinical finish off the underside of the crossbar and into the net.
PSG immediately pushed for a second and came close moments later, as Ousmane Dembélé’s powerful strike was brilliantly pushed onto the post by Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jørgensen.
Chelsea grew into the game after that warning. Pedro Neto forced a smart save from Matvey Safonov with a dangerous cutback, while at the other end Jørgensen reacted sharply to deny Barcola’s curling effort.
The visitors eventually found their equaliser when Enzo Fernández produced a superb cross-field pass to Malo Gusto, who drove a composed finish through Safonov to level the match.
However, the end-to-end contest continued to swing wildly. PSG regained the lead just before the break when Dembélé burst forward on the counterattack and finished coolly past Jørgensen — remarkably just 15 seconds after Cole Palmer had missed a clear chance at the other end.
Chelsea came out strongly in the second half, hoping to extend their impressive run against French opposition in the Champions League. Their persistence paid off in the 57th minute when Neto surged down the flank and delivered a perfect cross that Fernández finished confidently for his 12th goal of the season.
The equaliser set up a gripping final half-hour, prompting PSG manager Luis Enrique to introduce Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Lee Kang-In from the bench.
Kvaratskhelia quickly made his presence felt. The Georgian winger played a key role as PSG took the lead for the third time, selflessly setting up Vitinha for a sublime lobbed finish after a costly mistake by Jørgensen.
Chelsea thought they had restored parity once more when João Pedro tapped home from close range, but the celebrations were cut short as the offside flag ruled the goal out.
That moment proved decisive. PSG struck again in the 86th minute when Kvaratskhelia cut inside from the left and curled a stunning shot into the far corner, sending the Parc des Princes into celebration.
The Blues appeared shaken, and PSG took full advantage deep into stoppage time. Achraf Hakimi delivered a low cross into the box, where Kvaratskhelia was perfectly placed to convert and complete the scoring.
The late goal sealed an emphatic 5–2 victory for PSG and handed Luis Enrique’s side a significant advantage ahead of the second leg at Stamford Bridge next week.
