Valletta bounced back from their recent defeat to Birkirkara with a composed 2-0 win over Gżira United in the YoHealth Malta Premier League at the National Stadium.

Still smarting from their 1-0 loss last time out, the Citizens produced a disciplined and clinical display to secure three valuable points that move them closer to the top spots in the standings. While it was not their most fluent performance, Thane Micallef’s side made the most of their chances at key moments in the match.

The opening half offered limited goalmouth action. Gżira’s best opportunity came midway through when Brooklyn Borg latched onto a loose clearance inside the area, but his powerful volley was well blocked by Valletta goalkeeper Adilson Maringa.

Valletta struck on 39 minutes. Ahmed Adebayo combined neatly with Yuri Messias before seeing his initial effort blocked by goalkeeper Colombo, but the Nigerian reacted quickest to head home the rebound and give the Citizens the lead.

Gżira attempted to respond before the break, with Stasa Bastic firing just over in first-half stoppage time.

Valletta doubled their advantage five minutes into the second half. Following a defensive clearance by Sava Radic, Adebayo flicked the ball into the path of Andrea Zammit, who raced through and calmly chipped the ball over the advancing Colombo.

The second goal unsettled Gżira, and although Maxuell Maia headed wide shortly afterwards, Valletta remained in control and managed the closing stages effectively.

In stoppage time, Brandon Paiber came close to adding a third when his inswinging effort struck the crossbar.

The victory sees Valletta return to winning ways and strengthen their push up the table, while Gżira are left searching for consistency after another setback.
