Valletta FC set for historic transformation with new Football Campus in Pembroke

Valletta FC is on the verge of a historic milestone following the Prime Minister’s announcement that the government will propose the allocation of a site in Pembroke for the development of a flagship Football Campus. This regional sports and community hub is set to become the first of its kind in Malta, marking a new chapter for the island’s most supported club.
The proposal, which now awaits Parliamentary approval, is the result of an extensive collaborative process between the government and the club. Designed as a holistic master plan, the campus aims to deliver world-class sporting infrastructure that integrates football, health, rehabilitation, and sports science.
A Vision for Community and Sport
Prime Minister Robert Abela, addressing club members during the official announcement, emphasised that the government is honouring its long-standing commitment to the club. He noted that this “long-awaited dream” is finally transitioning from a concept to reality, with implementation expected to move at a rapid pace.
The site is intended to serve as more than just a training ground. It is envisioned as a center for social value, focusing on:
- Youth Development: Providing elite pathways for the next generation of players.
- Social Inclusion: Hosting community events, school partnerships, and dedicated women’s football programmes.
- Regional Regeneration: Enhancing the liveability of the Pembroke area through high-level investment aligned with existing planning frameworks.
“Decades of Uncertainty” End for the Citizens
For Valletta FC, a club boasting over 27,000 supporters, the project represents a definitive solution to years of administrative and infrastructural limbo.
Club President Claudio Grech highlighted the strategic importance of the move. “After decades of uncertainty, Valletta FC finally has clarity on its future,” Grech stated. “We will develop the first football campus on the island, providing an integrated facility through which we aim to contribute towards the enhancement of the football landscape in Malta.”
Grech further noted that the campus is a cornerstone of the club’s broader “Gen-V” project, an initiative launched less than two years ago with the goal of transforming Valletta FC into a regional football powerhouse.
Next Steps
While the land allocation remains subject to the Parliamentary process, the club has expressed its readiness to engage with all stakeholders to ensure the project meets its ambitious goals. Once approved, the facility will not only serve the “Citizens” but will also be open to thousands of athletes and community members, cementing its role as a vital asset for Maltese sport.
