Valletta cruise past Mġarr United to reach Jubilee Cup Quarter-Finals

Valletta booked their place in the Jubilee Cup quarter-finals with a convincing 4–0 victory over Challenge League side Mġarr United, setting up a potential showdown with Floriana or Ħamrun Spartans later in the competition.
The result was a welcome response from the Citizens following their shock defeat to Żabbar St Patrick in their previous league outing — their first loss of the season.
Early Control and First-Half Goals
Coach Thane Micallef rotated his squad, handing Timothy Aquilina a start in goal, while Jake Azzopardi, Keyron Ewurum, and Andrea Zammit also featured from the outset.
Valletta dominated from the start, with Azzopardi threatening after just five minutes as his effort was blocked by the Mġarr defence following a teasing cross from Shaft Brewer.
Midway through the half, Mġarr goalkeeper Luke Debono produced a fine stop to deny Yuri Messias, but the Brazilian forward made no mistake moments later — drilling a low strike past Debono in the 23rd minute to open the scoring.
Five minutes before half-time, Andrea Zammit was brought down in the box by Claudio Lazaro, and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Zammit stepped up confidently and converted from 12 yards to double Valletta’s advantage.
Dominant Second Half
Valletta maintained their pressure after the restart, and on 55 minutes, their lead grew further when Ivin Farrugia, in a moment of misfortune, turned Thaylor Aldama’s driven effort into his own net.
Substitute Andrei Ciolacu nearly added a fourth shortly after, only to see his header cleared off the line by Terence Vella.
The Citizens eventually found their fourth in the 75th minute, when Jefferson tapped home from close range after a perfectly weighted cross by Aldama — the winger’s second assist of the night.
Moments later, substitute goalkeeper Miguel Chetcuti reacted sharply to deny Ciolacu as Valletta continued to press for more.
Late Efforts and Closing Moments
Mġarr’s best chance came on 80 minutes when Christian Saint Ebisindor fired wide across goal from a tight angle. Aldama, seeking to cap his strong performance, went close soon after but blazed over the bar.
Ebisindor continued to pose problems with his pace and direct running, but with limited support around him, he was repeatedly closed down by Valletta’s well-organised back line.
Looking Ahead
The comprehensive win sends Valletta into the last eight of the Jubilee Cup, where they could face a classic showdown with either Floriana or Ħamrun Spartans, depending on the outcome of their clash.
The Citizens will also take heart from a confident attacking display and a much-needed morale boost as they continue to balance cup ambitions with their league campaign.
