Le Bris says Sunderland must deliver a masterclass to halt Arsenal’s winning run

Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris believes his side will need to produce nothing short of a masterclass if they are to stop Premier League leaders Arsenal when the two teams meet on Saturday.
The newly promoted Black Cats have been the surprise story of the season, collecting 18 points from their first 10 matches in their return to the top flight — their first Premier League campaign since 2016–17.
However, Le Bris knows that facing Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, who are looking to extend their lead at the top of the table to nine points, represents a far greater challenge than any they have faced so far.
“We have to play our best football, and if we’re afraid or too reserved against this kind of team, we’ll be punished,” Le Bris told reporters on Friday.
“If we’re too emotional, we’ll be punished. So we have to deliver a masterclass — we have no choice. It’s a good test after 10 games in the Premier League. This game comes at the perfect time to test and challenge us.”
One of Sunderland’s standout performers this season has been former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka, whose experience and leadership have proved invaluable.
Le Bris revealed that he and his coaching staff have been consulting the Swiss international for insights into his former club.
“He’s useful in different ways. His knowledge about Arsenal is important for us,” Le Bris said. “We spoke with him and the staff throughout the week. The key point is belief.
“He helps transmit confidence to the squad — to tell the players we can win something against this team, even if they are really strong. That part is very important.”
Sunderland’s 18-point haul marks the best start to a Premier League season by a promoted club since Hull City in 2008–09.
Le Bris also confirmed that defender Omar Alderete will miss the Arsenal clash as he continues to follow concussion protocols.
