Tottenham eye loan move for Trafford, but Man City set to block deal

James Trafford is attracting attention ahead of the January transfer window, but suggestions that a move is imminent appear premature.
Trafford’s situation at Manchester City has grown more complicated following the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma, who has pushed him further down the pecking order. This has sparked speculation linking him to clubs such as Newcastle and Tottenham.
However, the strength of these links varies. Newcastle’s interest appears minimal, with sources indicating that the club is not actively searching for a new goalkeeper, making a move to St James’ Park highly unlikely.
Tottenham, by contrast, presents a more credible option. Spurs are evaluating their goalkeeping options amid growing uncertainty over Guglielmo Vicario’s future, with interest reportedly coming from Inter Milan. Trafford could become a consideration if Vicario departs.
Even so, there is no indication that Manchester City are ready to sanction his exit — nor that Tottenham have formally approached the club. Inside City, Trafford is still seen as an important squad member, and with the team aiming for another Premier League title, the club has not prepared to replace him. Any move would likely require a substantial offer, and City are reportedly reluctant to approve a domestic loan at this stage.
For Trafford, limited playing time is far from ideal, but heavy competition was always expected. City never promised him regular first-team football upon his arrival.
Other potential landing spots also appear uncertain. Chelsea have previously expressed some interest but are not actively pursuing him, while Aston Villa have considered Trafford as a contingency should Emi Martinez leave.
Ultimately, Trafford’s future depends on whether City decide that a departure aligns with their plans. For now, that decision remains unresolved, leaving the goalkeeper to wait and see what comes next.
